Grazing Cattle Birdwell and Clark Ranch

It's been a tough year at the Birdwell and Clark Ranch. Cattle prices, health issues, both cattle and human, and unexpected labor constraints have all contributed to one tough year. Everyone I know has heard me say that from friends and family to participants at presentations and Holistic Management workshops. Everyone I know is tired of hearing me say that! I'm tired of hearing me say that! I know we are not alone in the challenges that the ranching environment and cattle markets dished up this year. Heck, as part of the aging Baby Boomers I should expect that certain ailments might get in the way of everyday ranch life. And yes, sadly, people move in and out of our lives due to unexpected circumstances.

But enough is enough.

I read the passage from Luke 11:9 and have been reflecting on it for the past two days: "So I say to you, Ask, and it will be given you; search, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened for you." Starting now, I'm asking, searching, and knocking! And when that door opens I just hope I have the eyes to see what's in front of me. Eyes that see the gift of four beautiful grandchildren, the loving relationships of our three married children, a father who turns 89 soon and still works 6.5 days a week, an extended family that is close, fun, healthy and flourishing, a church and community that is engaged in the lives of its members, professional associates that are supportive and helpful, tanks that are full, pastures that are teaming with abundant forage, the rambunctious joy of new puppies and the steadfast tolerance of the older canine generation, and a tenacious and committed husband.

Here's to 2017, a door opening! Oh, I have to say it... and improving cattle prices!
